What is the difference between office seating and office chairs?

“Office chairs” usually refers to the individual product; “office seating” is the term the contract furniture industry uses for the whole category — task chairs, executive chairs, meeting and conference seating, visitor and waiting-area chairs, stools and benches. When a project is specified, it is specified as seating, because the brief covers an entire floor rather than a single desk.

Mesh or fabric for a task chair?

Mesh is the better choice in warm or poorly air-conditioned spaces and for people seated for long stretches: it lets air through and does not trap heat. Technical fabric gives a more enveloping feel, a wider colour range and coordinates more easily with the rest of the furniture. Leather and eco-leather remain the representation choice. For an open space with many workstations, mesh is usually the safer specification.

How long should office seating last in intensive use?

A chair specified for eight-hour daily use should hold its mechanism and upholstery for well beyond the typical five-to-seven-year refurbishment cycle. What usually fails first is not the frame but the gas lift, the castors or the foam. This is why spare-part availability matters more than the initial warranty period: a chair whose components can be replaced outlives one that cannot, regardless of what the warranty says.

What does contract seating mean, and why does it matter?

Contract seating is furniture built and certified for commercial use rather than domestic use: higher cycle testing, fire-resistance requirements for the upholstery, and documentation for the specification file. Can the same seating range be specified for restaurants and bars?
