Bookcases, tables and seating for libraries and reading rooms
Library furniture has to support very different uses in the same building: quick browsing, quiet individual study, group work and casual reading. Public, school and university libraries are therefore planned in zones, each with seating, tables and storage suited to how intensively it is used and how long people stay.
Frezza designs and manufactures library furniture in Vidor, Italy: modular bookcases, tables, chairs, stools, poufs and storage, coordinated within a single project.
Modular bookcases and shelving
The Phylo bookcase comes in five heights from 46 to 198 cm, with metal, melamine or glass shelves. It works against the wall or freestanding, so it can also divide the library into zones, and it can be fitted with writable chalkboard backs, planters, containers with doors and lockers. In the 48 cm version with an upholstered cushion, Phylo becomes a bench, turning a run of low shelving into extra seating. Materials that should not sit on open shelves go into closed cabinets, while Lockers, 45 cm wide in three- or four-compartment units, keep students’ belongings secure.
Tables and chairs for reading rooms
In the reading room, tables are set out as individual or shared study spaces and paired with chairs built for heavy use: the Viggo ergonomic chair, the Charlize chair or the Lash wooden chair. Yo Wood by Progetto CMR is stackable and linkable, with a removable writing tablet on the sled-base version. At reference counters, the Ergotech Wood stool in beech plywood offers seat height adjustment and an adjustable footrest.
Lounge reading and teen spaces
Informal areas mix armchairs such as Poppea Soft, upholstered benches such as the Alplus bench, and the C1.8 pouf by Giorgio Topan, whose table version has a beech plywood writing surface 74 cm from the floor. The Gradone grandstand, with modules 90 or 135 cm deep on two levels, creates a stage for talks, story time or teen events, with USB ports and planters as options. Pop Easy high tables, 105 cm tall, add perching spots for short sessions.
Flexible furniture for group study and events
For group work, the high Be.1 Nomad Table on braked casters and the Agile mobile board with monitor holder move wherever they are needed, and the Mediawalk partition on wheels screens off a zone without construction work. Stackable chairs such as Noma, which stacks up to 12 high without armrests, and Yo Fabric clear the floor after events. The Alplus meeting pod carves out a corner for small groups.
School and university libraries
In schools and universities the library shares users with classrooms and study commons, so Frezza library furniture is coordinated with its educational furniture. For larger projects Frezza develops custom designs with in-house production, and architects and designers can find catalogs, data sheets and DWG files in the download area.
Library furniture: FAQs
How should a teen area in a library be furnished?
Teens tend to use the library in groups and for long stretches, so the area works best with a mix of postures rather than rows of tables: tiered seating for gathering, poufs and lounge chairs for casual reading, and high tables with stools for quick sessions on laptops. Frezza’s Gradone grandstand, the C1.8 pouf, Pop Easy high tables at 105 cm and Yo chairs and stools cover these uses, and Gradone’s USB ports keep devices charged where students actually sit.
Can library shelving double as seating?
Yes. In its 48 cm high version, the Phylo bookcase becomes a bench with a soft upholstered cushion, so a line of low shelving under a window or along a wall also provides seats for browsing. Taller Phylo units of 84 to 198 cm can then define the zones behind it, keeping the same steel frame and finishes across the room.
What are the options for student lockers in a library?
Frezza Lockers come in 45 cm wide modules with three or four compartments, at 147 or 195 cm high, and can be placed side by side with top and side panels for a continuous front. Doors are available with key locks, combination locks or programmable card locks opened by badge, and can be numbered. Lockers can also be integrated into Phylo bookcase compositions, with key, code or RFID locks.
How can library furniture be reconfigured for events and group work?
Plan a core of fixed shelving and reading tables, then keep the rest mobile. Tables on braked casters such as the Be.1 Nomad Table, the Agile mobile board and the Mediawalk partition on wheels can be moved to open up a space, while stackable chairs such as Noma, which stacks up to 12 high without armrests, are set out for talks and cleared away afterwards. Gradone modules can be recombined, and its 45 × 45 cm wheeled module works as a pouf or side table.
Do seating pods work in a library?
They work well as semi-private nooks for small groups in group-study zones, where conversation is expected. The Alplus meeting pod creates a defined corner with facing seats inside an open floor. For calls or discussions that need real acoustic separation, plan an enclosed group study room instead, and keep pods away from the quiet reading area.
