Educational furniture for schools and universities: grandstand seating, poufs, study tables, student lockers and chairs for commons and auditoriums
A school or university is much more than its classrooms: between lectures, students and faculty spend hours in lobbies, commons, study areas, libraries, break areas and auditoriums. Educational furniture for these spaces has to seat many people at once, change layout from one event to the next, stand up to daily use by hundreds of users and give everyone a place to sit, study and store their belongings.
Frezza educational furniture brings together modular grandstand seating and poufs for commons, tables and bookcases for study areas, student lockers, stackable and folding chairs for auditoriums and multipurpose rooms and stools for labs, to be chosen together and customized in the finishes of the project, for schools, university campuses, student housing and training centers.
Grandstand seating, poufs and lounge furniture for commons
Lobbies, wide corridors and meeting points are where a campus comes together. The Gradone grandstand, designed by Frezza, arranges seating on two levels with base modules 90 or 135 cm deep, the deeper one with a footrest for people sitting on the upper level, and a compact 45 x 45 cm module on wheels that becomes a pouf or a small storage table. With planters, lamps and USB sockets as accessories, it hosts informal presentations, small meetings, study sessions and breaks, and is reconfigured when the space changes function.
For seating areas, the C1.8 pouf, by Giorgio Topan, comes in a version with an integrated beech plywood table and a fabric handle to move it, while Frezza poufs, upholstered benches and armchairs and sofas complete the waiting areas of admissions offices and faculty lounges. For break areas and cafeterias, Yo Plastic, by Progetto CMR, brings the color of polypropylene into an easy-to-clean chair.
Tables and bookcases for study areas and libraries
Study areas have to work both for individual study and for groups. Pop Folding has a 25 mm melamine top that flips to a vertical position, lengths from 120 to 180 cm, depths of 60 or 80 cm and wheels: the tables link together with hooks for group work and are stored side by side when the area needs to be cleared. The Be.1 Nomad Table, by Progetto CMR, is a high table with a footrest crossbar and wheels with brakes, designed for universities, libraries and coworking spaces, for stand-up study and quick reviews.
The Phylo bookcase has a painted steel frame with a square section, shelves in metal, melamine or glass and heights from 46 to 198 cm, and with the writable chalkboard panel it also becomes a support for group work. To separate study stations without construction work, the Agile board on wheels with a monitor holder and the Be.1 Mediawalk mobile partition go wherever they are needed, together with partition walls for permanent divisions.
Student lockers and storage
Every student needs a secure place for a backpack, a laptop and books. Lockers are 45 cm wide, with 3 compartments at 147 cm high or 4 compartments at 195 cm high, close with a key, a combination or a badge and have numbered doors, to assign them to each student or use them on a rotating basis. In corridors and faculty rooms, Frezza office cabinets store records, teaching materials and equipment.
Seating for auditoriums, multipurpose rooms and labs
Auditoriums and multipurpose rooms go from a conference to an exam to a graduation event. Magic, designed by Frezza, has folding sides, a tip-up seat and swivel casters at the front, so many chairs can be stacked quickly in little space. Noma has a frame in 22 mm steel rod and stacks up to 12 chairs without armrests, while Yo Wood, with a shell in beech plywood or oak, has a removable writing tablet in the sled-base version. Yo Fabric and Yo Upholstered add upholstery for representative rooms.
In labs, people work at high benches and switch between sitting and standing. Ergotech Wood has a beech plywood seat, gas height adjustment and an aluminum footrest and is certified to EN 16139 and EN 1728, while Ergotech PU, in easy-to-clean integral polyurethane, is certified to EN 1335 and suited to labs with hygiene requirements.
Educational furniture then coordinates with training room furniture, library furniture and auditorium furniture: by choosing chairs and tables from the same collections, such as Yo, the classrooms, commons and study areas of a campus stay consistent, with upholstery and finishes customized to the project.
For architects and interior designers, technical sheets and DWG files of the collections are available, to drop straight into the project of educational furniture.
Educational furniture: frequently asked questions
What does commercial grade school furniture mean?
Commercial grade school furniture is designed and tested for intensive, shared use in public buildings rather than for the home: sturdier frames, materials that are easy to clean, components that can be replaced and certifications that a specifier can check. Frezza designs furniture for contract use, with product certifications such as EN 16139 and EN 1728 for Ergotech Wood and EN 1335 for Ergotech PU, and company certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, forest chain of custody, CQA Formaldehyde and LEVEL, with LEED credits for green building projects.
How do you furnish active learning and flexible learning spaces?
Active learning spaces need furniture that moves and regroups in minutes: Pop Folding tables on wheels link into clusters and fold away, stackable chairs such as Yo and Noma clear the floor, the Agile board on wheels with monitor holder and the Be.1 Mediawalk partition create team zones, and the Be.1 Nomad Table high table supports stand-up work. Plan the layout around activities, such as presentation, team work, individual study, rather than around a fixed teaching wall.
What furniture works in a school breakout space?
A breakout space has to host small groups, quiet study and informal presentations in the same footprint. The Gradone grandstand, with 90 or 135 cm deep modules, seats a group on two levels and its 45 x 45 cm module on wheels becomes a pouf or a storage table; C1.8 poufs with integrated table, upholstered benches and high tables complete the area, with USB sockets and lamps available as Gradone accessories.
What regulations apply to school furniture in the UK?
Classroom chairs and tables are specified to BS EN 1729, which sets sizes by age group and safety requirements, while upholstered seating in public buildings is usually specified to the contract fire standard BS 7176 or to the fire strategy of the project. For furniture outside the classroom, check the certifications of each product on its technical sheet and confirm with Frezza the documents required by the tender.
Are Revit families and BIM files available for educational furniture?
Yes, the Frezza download area provides technical sheets, catalogs and DWG files of the collections, and for many products, such as Gradone and Magic, also RFA (Revit), SKP and FBX models, ready to use in BIM models, layouts and renderings.
