Office bench desks: versatile solutions for collaborative work
An office bench desk replaces individual desks with a single shared structure carrying several positions. The result is more people per square metre, one cable route instead of six, and a floor that can be reorganised without replacing furniture. Frezza has produced bench systems since 1954 in Vidor, in the province of Treviso.
Modern solutions for optimizing team workspaces
Because the structure is shared, a bench composition fits more positions into the same floor area than separate desks would. The Pop Ace and Pop Panel ranges build rows of two, four, six or more places on one frame, while Pop Easy offers a lighter structure for spaces that change often.
Composition, sizing and layout
Each position is normally 140 or 160 cm wide, with 80 cm of depth per side on a back-to-back row. A four-place island therefore measures roughly 280 to 320 cm in length, and the same components scale to a twelve-place row without any change of system. Allow 90 cm of circulation behind each seated position when planning the floor.
Facilitating teamwork and communication
Working side by side is only productive if noise stays under control. Acoustic screens mounted on the frame give each position a visual boundary and absorb conversation, while shared storage units mark the end of a row without closing it off. The Be.1 and Alplus collections are designed around this balance between exchange and concentration.
Power, data and height adjustment
A continuous cable raceway runs the length of the bench, so power and data reach every position from a single floor box. Sit-stand tops such as Pop Ad can be specified for part of a row only and added later to an existing composition, which is how most clients introduce height adjustment progressively.
Ergonomic office chairs: the perfect match for collaborative workstations
Bench positions are used by different people across the week, so the seating has to adapt quickly. Frezza supplies ergonomic office chairs coordinated with the bench finishes, with controls simple enough to be adjusted by whoever sits down that morning.
Contract projects and made-to-measure supply
Frezza works with architects and specifiers from the specification stage, providing technical drawings, finish samples and the documentation required for contract supply and public tenders.
Office bench desks: frequently asked questions
What is bench desking?
Bench desking is a system in which several workstations share one structure and one cable route, instead of each desk standing on its own frame. It originated in open-plan offices as a way to fit more people into the same floor area, and has since become the standard for operational teams because it is quicker to reconfigure than individual desks.
What is the difference between a bench desk and individual office desks?
Three things. A bench fits more positions into the same area, because the structure is shared rather than duplicated. It carries power and data along a single raceway instead of running a cable to each desk. And it can be extended, shortened or rearranged using the components already installed. Individual desks, in exchange, give more separation and suit roles that need privacy.
Can bench desks be configured back to back for four or six people?
Yes. Bench systems compose in back-to-back rows of two, four, six or more positions sharing one structure and a continuous cable raceway. Screens, storage units and acoustic panels fix to the same frame, so a four-person island and a twelve-person row use identical components.
Can privacy screens and storage be added to a bench system?
Yes. Acoustic screens mount directly on the frame, in fabric or in glass where daylight matters, and can be specified at different heights depending on how much separation each team needs. Pedestals, lockers and end-of-row storage units coordinate with the same finishes and can be added after installation.
Are office bench desks suitable for shared-desk and hybrid working?
They are the usual choice for it. Positions are identical and unassigned, so anyone can sit anywhere, and the lack of personal storage at the desk is solved with lockers at the end of the row. Height-adjustable tops with memory controls make it quick for each person to set their own position on arrival.
